From “A Grandparents Book, Thoughts and Memories and Hopes for a Grandchild”, a book of questions completed by Frankie Ruth (Simmons) Faull
Seybert in 2003. Also from an interview just before her death in 2004.
GROWING UP: COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY YEARS
DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE? WHERE WAS IT?
Eastern Christian Institute, Orange, New Jersey (1950-1952). I had a Missionary scholarship and worked for the “Go Ye Chapel” of New York City,
Elmer Kyle, Evangelist.
DID YOU HAVE ANY OUTSTANDING OR MEMORABLE TEACHERS? Mr. Elmer Kyle who got me a missionary scholarship to go to Orange, New
Jersey the first year. He was the missionary teacher and director of the “Go Ye Chapel” mission of New York City.
WHAT WERE YOUR GOALS WHEN YOU WERE A STUDENT? To be a Christian teacher and missionary, and maybe a minister’s wife.
WERE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES? Working on weekends on Long Island, New York – Hicksville Church of Christ.
Calling house to house. Cleaning the Church and teaching children.
NOTES: I was the cook for the unmarried students at ECI in the Old Colgate Mansion. Fairly new small college and had about 15 to 20 single
students. I worked on weekends on Long Island Hicksville and surveyed Levit Town.
From the Interview:
"Not long after I was there, they bought the Colgate Estate in Orange, New Jersey and had a wing for the girls and one for the boys. It had a kitchen in
the basement. I was at the Colgate Estate when I left the college (1952). The Colgate mansion had a tennis court and at least 3 or 4 acres. There was
a beautiful ballroom with mirrors that was used for Chapel and big gatherings such as graduation. On one end was a large lounge. As far as I can
recall, it was a brick building set among pretty woods. The address was “491 S Center Street, Orange, NJ”.
At the college, to pay for my food, I was the kitchen supervisor. I cooked, organized meals and bought food for the college kitchen. My mother sent
enough money for my personals – rent and food. I saved every penny to buy dresses because I had terrible homemade clothes. I bought myself
some dresses and scrimped and scrimped to save for them......."
