| Muriel Sutherland Snowden was born in Orange, New Jersey on July 14, 1916, one of three children of a dentist. She grew up in nearby Glen Ridge and was class valedictorian at the high school. She received her A.B. from Radcliffe in 1938. She and her husband Otto in 1949 conceived, founded and directed Freedom House, Inc. a nationally renowned civic center in the heart of Boston’s African-american community.
